Service to Others Committee

The Service to Others Committee reviews proposals for the RTO/ERO Provincial grant of up to $4000.00 to fund a special project. In the past, approved projects have included Griffin Literacy Project and provision of books to a school in China . Proposals are accepted in the fall of the year. Application forms and full details are available on the RTO/ERO Provincial website at www.rto-ero.org. District 13 submits one proposal for provincial consideration based on a recommendation by the local Service to Others Committee. “SERVICE TO OTHERS” GRANTS–OUR HISTORY
YEAR 2000: “Libraries Let’s Celebrate” Program, Hamilton Public Library

The grant of $4000 supported the ” Visiting Illustrators and Authors” program of the Hamilton Public Library. Children were provided with opportunities to meet and hear illustrators and authors helping to foster life-long learning and lending support to teachers and students in the classroom.

YEAR 2003: “V.O.I.C.E. Program, Haldimand Senior Support Services

The grant of $1900 provided the means by which training and skill development sessions were held for the organization’s volunteers. Teams of two teachers from Dunnville and two teachers from Cayuga with support staff led the enhancement training sessions. Part of the grant’s funds were also used to assist volunteers taking the Food Handling Course.

YEAR 2004: Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice, Hamilton

The grant of $3800 made possible the purchase of an LCD projector, a tripod screen, an overhead projector and two display boards. This equipment was put to use in giving presentations/workshops/courses to community and professional groups to raise funds for Hamilton’s first free-standing residential hospice. At the time of writing, over one million dollars has been raised.

YEAR 2005: “Special trips for school-age children and youth”, Wesley Urban Ministries, Hamilton

The grant of $3000 was designed to give financially-disadvantaged Hamilton youth opportunities to experience educational, recreational and cultural trips they would not otherwise have been able to afford. Over the summer of 2005, Canada’s Wonderland, the Ontario Science Centre, Bingeman’s, Sportsworld and Bronte Creek Nature Centre had been visited. Approximately 40 children attended each outing. More field trips were to be taken through 2005 and into 2006.

YEAR 2006: Educational Archives Promotion Project, Hamilton-Wentworth Public School Board

The grant of $2500 enabled the Archives to purchase a digital camera, data projector, a computer and an LCD flat-screen monitor. This equipment is used to heighten awareness of the Archives to the general public and to enhance knowledge of the value of the Archives at the Board of Education level.

YEAR 2007: RTO/ERO ESL Resource Centre, Xi Yuan Middle School, China

Xi Yuan Middle School in the Jiangsu Province of China was given a grant of $3000 to provide funds for an English resource area within the existing school library. Teaching materials specifically designed for ESL were to be set up in the teachers’ resource area.

YEAR 2008: “The Original Griffin Literacy Project”, Hamilton

Diane Tremblay-Griffin was granted $2000 to provide teachers, caregivers and students with props and storytelling resources that will assist them in building and developing literacy skills. Hamilton inner city schools in the program would receive hand-knitted puppets, language board games and instructional activity cards to help students develop an interest in reading and a comprehension of story content.

YEAR 2009: “Art Without Barriers” Summer Camp, Art Gallery of Hamilton

The Art Gallery of Hamilton received a grant for $4000 enabling several children from families who cannot easily afford summer camp programs to attend a week-long art camp in August 2010. This grant included a $300 contribution from District 13 (Hamilton-Wentworth, Haldimand). Professional art instuctors will assist in delivery of the program and the participants will be given an art kit to continue creating art at home after the camp finishes.
